The ChandelierThe crystal chandelier which hangs from the Palace ceiling is the epitome of exquisite artistry and craftsmanship of the past, and continues to spread light and beauty to generations of Lorainites. The fixture may look dainty from its 90ft height above the theatre, but it weighs approximately three-quarters of a ton! The chandelier is 26 feet tall, over 26 feet in circumference, and composed of over 50,000 handcud lead crystal beads imported from Czechoslovakia. 9 prisms dangle from each of the chandelier's 40 candle arms and it is illuminated by 87 forty watt bulbs. In 1928 the chandelier cost $20,000. Present replacement would be several times that amount.
The New Projection and Sound SystemsWhen the Palace first opened its doors in 1928, it was the first motion picture theater in Ohio to have talking pictures. Sixty eight years later, the Palace is once again on the cutting edge. The Palace had been using the same carbon arc projectors since 1935. The light on the screen was created when 80 amps of electricity jumped between two large pencil-sized carbon rods. The carbon arc generated enough illumination to project the movie onto the screen 180 feet away. The new system is very similar to the old; however, the flame is now sealed in a xenon bulb. The heat generated from this lamp is so great that it has a portable water cooling system. The new lamp gives a consistently brighter picture to the screen and eliminates the flickering of the old flame carbon arc.
In the past, the Palace had two projectors which alternated use every 18 minutes. A projectionist had to rethread each projector and rewind the film 6-8 times per movie. The equipment used from 1935-1996 is now on display in the outer lobby of the Palace. The newly installed equipment is called a platter system. The film is spliced together into one continuous reel, and the projector is threaded once. We can now show a movie continuously for as long as four hours. This type of system is often installed in movie theatres with multiple screens, so that one projectionist can control 8 or more screens at one time.
The new Palace sound system consists of nineteen individual speaker systems with a total capacity of 16,000 watts. There are 5 loudspeakers behind the movie screen, two of which are used solely for sub-woofer effects. There are fourteen loud speaker systems assigned to two surround channels, and are hung at six different locations around the side and rear walls of the theater. These loud speaker systems primarily produce effects, reverberation and spatial ambiance. The left and right surround systems have a total capacity of 9,000 watts. The loudspeaker system for the cinema is driven by seven state-of-the-art audio power amplifiers. The three small amplifiers produce 1,050 watts while the four large amplifiers produce approximately 2,000 watts.
Most importantly, the sound source for the new cinema system is digital. This means that the six channel information read from the film is noise free with audio quality that exceeds the best CD player. The combination of a digital sound source amplified by high capacity audio power amplifiers produced puts the patrons in the middle of even the most spectacular effects. You, as an audience member, will become totally immersed in the movie.
When the Wurlitzer Organ, Opus 1858, was shipped from the North Tonawanda Factory on March 14, 1928, the era of grand theatres was coming to a close. With the advent of talking pictures, the mighty voices of the organs were silenced. In the ensuing years these once loved organs were forgotten and discarded by our "throw away society". Fortunately, the Lorain Palace organ remained intact until the rebirth of the facilty. After painstaking restoration by dedicated volunteers, the Mighty Wurlitzer is again ready to thrill and entertain patrons of the Palace Civic Center.
